Free digital signage

Free digital signage software, honestly.

Free options exist and sometimes they are the right call. Here is where they work, where they quietly get expensive, and exactly what we give away — written by people with an obvious interest, so check our reasoning, not our word.

The short answer

SignageWall is not free forever: the full product is free for 21 days with no card, and after that it costs €8 per screen per month. If what you need is genuinely covered by a free tool, use the free tool — this page is for working out whether it is.

What "free" means in signage

Free digital signage comes in three shapes. Free tiers of commercial products: real, but limited in screens, features or branding, and priced so that the useful version is the paid one. Open-source software you host yourself: genuinely free to license, never free to run — somebody sets it up, updates it and fixes it at nine in the evening. And the USB stick in the back of the TV: free, instant, and the reason so many screens show last month's menu.

Where free is genuinely the right call

One screen, content that changes a few times a year, and a technical person who enjoys maintaining it — a self-hosted open-source player on that screen is a fine setup, and paying a subscription for it would be waste. The same goes for a temporary screen at a one-off event. We would rather tell you this than have you discover it after subscribing.

Where free gets expensive

The cost of free tools is time, and it arrives later. The screen that needs a ladder and a USB stick for every price change. The self-hosted server nobody dares update because the person who installed it left. The free tier that needed three workarounds, each owned by the one colleague who understands them. None of this shows up in month one; all of it shows up in year one. A fair comparison is your hourly cost times the hours — not zero against €8.

What SignageWall gives you free

The complete product for 21 days: pair a real screen, build playlists, connect apps, and see whether updates reach the display fast enough for your workflow. No card at any point, and no feature held back to force the upgrade — the trial is the product. If it does not earn the subscription in three weeks of real use, it should not get it.

What happens when the trial ends

The account is deleted — organizations, screens, paired players, playlists, uploaded media and settings, permanently, and we cannot bring any of it back afterwards. You get one email the day before, and asking for an upgrade before the deadline holds the account while we prepare the invoice. If you decide against it, keep your own copies of anything you uploaded before the deadline; after that you have lost 21 days of rent on one screen and nothing else.

How to evaluate any signage software in an afternoon

Put a real screen on the wall it will actually hang on. Change a price from your phone and time how long the screen takes. Pull the network cable for ten minutes and watch what the screen does. Ask a non-technical colleague to swap an image without help. Whatever tool passes those four checks — free or paid — is the right one for you.
